The gallery derived its name from its location in China. The S stands for Shanghai and the M represents Moganshan, put it together and you have the SMart Gallery. While many people are familiar with Shanghai few know that it has an evolving and thriving art market. This movement is being driven by expats and a growing Chinese population that has disposable income focusing on cultural edification and appreciating the subtle benefits of an art filled life. Moganshan is in the older part of Shanghai and is the name of a road that borders the Suzhou Creek where the gallery is located. This area where the gallery is located is known as M 50 which are a converted group of factories that artists from around China have called home for the past 10 years or so. Recently many of the artists have been finding new locations for their studios and M 50 has grown in prominence as the premier area to view art in Shanghai as there are many galleries in this area. The Smart gallery officially opened in 2007 at its current location.
