This show highlights five contemporary artists who have been influenced by their own culture and the world they grew up in and not the influence recently inherited from the West. The artworks being produced during the past two decades in China reflect the turmoil which has awakened an imperative for artists trying to understand even interpret through their art China’s upsurge of power not just economically but also culturally. As a result of the open door policy in the early 1980’s, all kinds of western contemporary, pop and modern art flooded into China and divided the artists into two groups: those who wanted to follow the West and those who wanted to further explore Chinese art and tradition with a contemporary perspective. What the artworks of the current exhibition share is a sense of bieyang. Bie Yang means ‘original’ in Mandarin, it’s a quality and a force to keep one’s production genuine, away from the crowds. It also means to keep oneself in a constant internal dialogue, of creative and constructive self-exploration. These artists are trying to solve formal questions in an unconventional way that set them apart from their counterparts, a wisdom in judgment, sensible and clear. They invite their viewers to appreciate this simplicity of style, technique, application and form.
在中国当代艺术“群雄逐鹿”“战火纷飞”的今天，Smart Gallery以其不跟随媚俗、不盲目从众，做真正品质艺术的思维冷静地出现了，就像乱世中头脑清醒的思想家，Smart Gallery以从容的态度面对时局，用机敏的眼光选择有修养、有个性、有发展的艺术家合作，此次展览展出了Smart Gallery部分签约艺术家和合作艺术家的作品，他们有些并不是很有名的艺术家，但却是很有实力、很有修养、很有个性的艺术家，并且他们正用各自的作品一点点佐证着中国当代艺术的轨迹，用各自的思想一步步验证着中国艺术的前景与走向。
